AWS for Nonprofits (AWS Nonprofit Credit Program)
AWS offers eligible nonprofits promotional credits (up to US$5,000 according to AWS, with local partners such as Connecting Up quoting US$1,000) through the TechSoup network, plus free training. Larger awards are made through the AWS Imagine Grant.
Official page ↗What you get
- AWS promotional credits for cloud use, valid for 12 months once applied (AWS's program page says up to US$5,000; Connecting Up says US$1,000 per financial year in Australia)
- The AWS Free Tier for new accounts (a separate offer)
- Free AWS training and the Nonprofit Technical Hub resources
- Access to the AWS Imagine Grant (see that entry)
Who's eligible
Delivered through TechSoup and its partner NGOs in about 50 countries. Amounts vary by partner and country.
- Be a nonprofit that qualifies with TechSoup or your national TechSoup partner (US: 501(c)(3) and certain other 501(c) types and libraries; elsewhere your national charity registration)
- Have an AWS account whose account name matches your organisation name
- Meet the AWS partner's rules for your country
Usually not eligible
- Credits cannot be used for reserved instances, Mechanical Turk, AWS Marketplace, domain registration, or upfront fees
- Credits that are not used within 12 months expire
How to apply
- 1Create an AWS account in your organisation's name (free; credit card required) and note the account ID.
- 2Qualify with TechSoup or your national partner (see the TechSoup, Connecting Up, TechSoup UK, TechSoup Canada, ENCLUDE entries).
- 3Request the AWS credits in the partner's catalogue and enter your AWS account ID.
- 4The partner delivers the credits to your account. Set a budget alert in AWS so you know when credits run out.
- 5Use the credits within 12 months. After they run out or expire, your card is charged at standard rates.
Typical approval time: Not stated.
Have these ready
- A valid AWS account ID with the organisation name in the account name field
- A credit card (AWS requires it to open an account)
- Your TechSoup (or national partner) account qualification
Tips
- AWS's own page and partner pages quote different amounts (US$1,000, US$2,000 and up to US$5,000). Check the amount in your partner's catalogue.
- Set billing alerts. After the credits end you will be billed at normal rates.
- The credits are the easy part; hiring an engineer to build and run things is the real cost.
