Who's eligible

Charities registered in the countries where Google for Nonprofits has launched. Google publishes registration rules by country and says that if your country is not listed it has not launched there yet; not every product is available in every country. Checked for this directory: United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are all covered.

  • Be registered as a charity in a listed country: US 501(c)(3) (or an affiliated group-exemption member); UK: Charity Commission, NICC or OSCR registration, HMRC charitable tax exemption, exempt charities or churches; Ireland: Charities Regulator registration, Revenue charitable tax exemption, tax-exempt sports bodies or non-profit companies limited by guarantee on the Companies Registration Office register; Canada: CRA-registered charity, nonprofit with tax exemption, federal or provincial nonprofit corporation; Australia: ACNC registered, ATO DGR status or ATO income-tax-exempt NFP; New Zealand: Charities Services, Inland Revenue tax-exempt nonprofit or donee organisation
  • Be verified by Goodstack, Google's validation partner
  • Agree to the Google for Nonprofits additional terms

Usually not eligible

  • Governmental entities or organisations
  • Hospitals or healthcare organisations (their charitable arms or foundations can qualify)
  • Schools, universities and other academic institutions (use Google for Education; their philanthropic arms can qualify)
  • US fiscally sponsored projects that do not have their own 501(c)(3) status

How to apply

  1. 1Check your country's registration rules at support.google.com/nonprofits (Eligibility guidelines) and make sure your regulator record is current.
  2. 2Go to google.com/nonprofits and click Get started, signing in with the Google account that will administer it.
  3. 3Follow the link to Goodstack, find your organisation and complete the verification.
  4. 4Wait for the email. Google says most requests are reviewed in 2 to 14 business days.
  5. 5Sign in to your Google for Nonprofits account and activate each product separately: Google Workspace, Ad Grants, YouTube Nonprofit Program and Maps credits.
  6. 6For Workspace, you need a domain you own. Follow the activation steps to verify the domain and create your admin account.

Typical approval time: Most requests are reviewed in 2 to 14 business days (Google).

Have these ready

  • Your registration or tax ID number (charity number, EIN, ABN/ACNC number, CRA number and so on)
  • Usually no upload: Goodstack finds you in regulator data. If it cannot, it will ask for a registration certificate or tax-exemption letter (see the Goodstack entry)
  • A work email address to prove you are linked to the organisation

Tips

  • Each product has to be activated separately. Approval of the nonprofit account does not turn them on automatically.
  • Ad Grants has its own website and performance rules; apply as soon as you are approved, but only once your website is ready.
  • Use a Google account that more than one person can recover. Do not tie the nonprofit account to one volunteer's personal Gmail.
  • If you already pay for Workspace, you can switch to the nonprofit edition without starting again.
  • Product availability varies by country: log in to your account to see which products are available in yours.
