Eligible community non-profits keep free service messages beyond the 1,000-a-month free tier on the WhatsApp Business Platform until 31 December 2027; the Business app is free for everyone.
Meta's page does not describe an application step. Ask your WhatsApp Business provider or Meta whether your organisation counts as an eligible community non-profit.
Great for
- Organisations whose communities already use WhatsApp, especially outside the US
- Small teams who want a free shared business number with quick replies
- Community groups and migrant or refugee services where WhatsApp is the main channel
- Free to start and widely used worldwide
- Most supporters already have the app
- Eligible non-profits get free service messages on the platform until the end of 2027
Watch out for
- Organisations that must keep sensitive client details off big-tech platforms
- Teams that need a shared inbox with many agents without paying for a provider
- Organisations whose audience does not use WhatsApp
- Template messages need prior opt-in and approval
- Meta's non-profit rule covers community non-profits (for example in public health, crisis response, disaster relief and civic engagement), not every charity
- Tied to Meta's rules, which change
Problems it solves
About WhatsApp Business+
WhatsApp Business is made for organisations that already talk to supporters, clients or volunteers on WhatsApp. The free Business app adds a profile, quick replies, greeting messages, broadcast lists and linked devices. Larger or automated use goes through the WhatsApp Business Platform, which charges per delivered message. From 1 October 2026 Meta keeps service messages free for eligible community non-profits.
Pricing: The WhatsApp Business app is free. The Business Platform (for automation, bots and bulk sending through a provider) is charged per delivered template message since 1 July 2025: marketing templates are always charged, utility and authentication templates are charged outside an open customer-service window, and replies within the 24-hour window are free. Rates differ by recipient country. From 1 October 2026 service messages are charged after 1,000 free a month per number, except for eligible governments and community non-profits.
Key features+
AI features+
The platform supports chatbots built by providers; the app has no built-in AI that I confirmed.
Data & privacy+
Personal chats are end-to-end encrypted. Messages sent through a provider on the Business Platform may be stored by that provider, so check your provider's terms before sending sensitive details.
How sure are we?+
Partly confirmed on the vendor's pages; some details from reputable secondary sources. Prices and nonprofit programs change often, so check with WhatsApp Business before you commit. Rankings on Nonprofit Tools are never for sale.
